Evaluation for my group choreography

Overall I think that it is very clear to see the distress that is caused in the piece as well as the collaboration of the brain and mind. I also believe that the individual emotions from the mind come across clearly as they drift out of the brain one at a time in the beginning of the performance. The awareness of DID which we are trying to raise comes across clearly as the formations and dramatic movements portray the tension between the two personalities we are using in our piece. I think that taking part in choreographing the performance has really helped develop my choreographic style and I would describe my style as using the whole of the body to show the meaning and intention of the piece, to add I would say that my choreography usually comes from my upper body and then down towards my lower body. This process has also helped me step out side of my comfort zone more as it’s lead me to using other choreographic techniques which have developed into beginning to find my own individ...

Analysing Martha Graham’s ‘Cave of the Heart’

I have been looking at Martha Graham’s piece “Cave of the Heart”, unlike her performance ‘Diversion of Angels’ this piece has as story like most of Graham’s work. The performance is based on a scientific study of the power of love and deep passions human beings are capable of having, but also around the Myth of Medea which is one of many Greek tragedies, the story tells a sorcerer who is in love and waiting for attention from and an adventurer named Jason who has recently returned from battle. However, instead of giving Medea (the sorcerer) the affection she desires, Jason betrays her for the Princess of Corinth. The Sorcerer represents the power of love and is described by Graham as a serpent who is protecting the heart and will strike at any danger to guard the heart, but also wants to seek revenge against anyone that betrays or disobeys it. (Sherwood, 2020) The relationship between the music and the movement creates a dramatic impact on each other as the music contains a lot of ten...

Analysing Martha Graham’s “Diversion of Angels” performance

Image
I have been looking at Martha Graham and her piece "Diversion of Angels", which was originally called "Wilderness Stair". The message in the performance is about three different couples who represent the diiferent traits of love, where their costumes represent the role they are showing. For example, red couple portrays romantic and passionate love, the white couple represent mature love and the yellow couple represent flirtatious and young love. Graham's piece doesn't actually have a story line, unlike most of her work, however this performance is about the feeling of joy and excitement when falling in love for the first time (Sherwood, 2018). Martha Graham received her inspiration from two different sources, one of them was a poem by Ben Belitt and its reads; “It is the place of the Rock and Ladder, the raven, the blessing, the tempter, the rose. It is the wish of the single-hearted, the undivided; play after the spirit’s labor; games, flights, fancies, ...

Problems and solutions in the choreographic process

Image
In the choreography process so far as a group we have found certain issues and have tried to find ways to over come them, for example a problem we had was spacing, as the two groups in the nostalgic memory section were both crowded on the right side of stage so there wasn’t any clarity between the groups, this meant the left side of stage wasn’t being used. To over come this we had one person from the group look at the piece and give feedback on what we could improve, so Taylor viewed the piece and advised the group around the back of the stage to curve round to the left side of stage so that it was clear to the audience that there’s two groups. Another problem we looked at as a group was how we taught the choreography during our rehearsal time, as we only have a certain amount of time before the deadline for the piece. The issue in this was that we were focusing on cleaning chunks of choreography before learning the whole of the choreography, therefore what we are going to do from n...

Choreography methods

In the parts of choreography I am responsible for, I am working in small groups of two and three where we have decided to split the sections equally so we have an amount of counts each. The choreography that I have created is linked to the build of the two personalities in DID beginning to start tension. The style of choreography I have used is harsh and heavy but uses a pulsing motion so that the choreography can have a good contrast when the big conflict happens between to two personalities. The ideas for this piece came from a simple standing, squatting position as I wanted the choreography to start quite low and grounded so that I could build the levels to represent the gradual tension between the personalities. A challenge I faced while creating my section was that I was only satisfied with a small part of my choreography and felt as though some of it didn’t give across the message that I wanted to portray. To overcome this I decided to video the choreography I had created an...

Choreographic devices

Before we started working on the piece it’s self me and my group did a few choreography activities to get us think about different ways we can interpret a stimulus and how working with each other can bring on different ideas. One activity we did was to each receive a stimulus in a small group which was either an image or a painting, my stimulus was a painting of what looked like a town set on fire. This reminded me of The Fire of London as the houses looked as though they were from that era, the colours in the painting I think resemble anger, danger and frustration and this really developed how I thought about movements I could suggest. This activity really helped me think about the storyline of a routine and how there can be journeys and starting points with in a piece. The painting is also very abstract and has a lot of contrasting lines and shapes which is something me and my partner had through about when creating the choreography. Previously mentioned in one of my other blogs, m...

Structure and process of my group choreography

The structure me and my group used to create our choreography, was by listing certain points in the music we are using (which is called Bloodstream by Tokio Myers) and deciding what relevance the music and choreography would have to our theme. As a group we discussed and asked who would like to create choreography for sections of the music, where some were given pieces to develop in a group or individually.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WzgFohAu1W4  (Here is the link for the music we are using, Bloodstreem by Tokio Myers)   Personally I am in a group of three where we are responsible for the build in the music before a huge change occurs, we will be using contrasting movements that will have different dynamics. A movement example which we could possibly use is, standing facing the front with both feet parallel and the left arm reaching towards the ceiling whilst the right arm is slightly pulling down towards the ground by the side of your body with your head slig...
