Choreographic devices

Before we started working on the piece it’s self me and my group did a few choreography activities to get us think about different ways we can interpret a stimulus and how working with each other can bring on different ideas. One activity we did was to each receive a stimulus in a small group which was either an image or a painting, my stimulus was a painting of what looked like a town set on fire. This reminded me of The Fire of London as the houses looked as though they were from that era, the colours in the painting I think resemble anger, danger and frustration and this really developed how I thought about movements I could suggest. This activity really helped me think about the storyline of a routine and how there can be journeys and starting points with in a piece. The painting is also very abstract and has a lot of contrasting lines and shapes which is something me and my partner had through about when creating the choreography. Previously mentioned in one of my other blogs, me and my group decided to split the music into sections and give each person a part of the music to choreograph. Within this, certain individuals created pieces of movements to go with parts of the music which they taught to the rest of the group during rehearsal time. Some of the sections we learnt did contain choreographic devices. For example one section of choreography contained a cannon which was used to portray the impact of the two different personalities in DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) it has on that one person. In my own section that I am responsible for I would really like to use repetition or even accumulation especially as my piece of choreography needs to be about the build before the clash of the two personalities and therefore the repetition is showing the intensity building and maybe the repetitive movements starting small and progressively getting bigger towards the explosion between the personalities. I think that using cannon and repetition has really helped me think about other ideas to use for my own personal choreography as it’s reminded me to make sure that when creating choreography it’s important to link it back to what the piece is about and how the movements show what it’s about clearly to an audience. It’s also helped me think about other choreography devices like accumulation and retrograde but also different techniques I can use to create choreography like Chance which Merce Cunningham used or thinking of different descriptive words that link to your stimulus and making individual movements to those words.

  1. Hi Liv, again this is another great Blog! I like how you incorporated tasks we completed in class and how this helped you create choreography for our assessment piece. I also like how you included an example of how choreographic devices have already been incorporated into the choreography, and what choreographic devices you are planning to use in your sections to help highlight the building tension of the section. You could next time think about how one choreographic device helped develop an idea into something else, for example how in the beginning section of our piece we used cannon to disperse from the group formation which led us to think about travelling in specific pathways to create a split focus :)

  2. Hi Olivia I liked how you explained how the exercises we did in class helped you and also how descriptive you were when talking about your plans for your section. I think it might have read smoother if you have broken it up into a few paragraphs but that is just my preference. Well done!

  3. It's great to see how the exercises you have used in class has helped you develop your own choreography style. Have you discussed any practitioners in class with Miss Evans or watched any videos of practitioners that may match or contrast what you have done with your work? I would be interested to be a reference with your mention of Cunningham and also the image that you are talking about at the beginning of your blog.

  4. Hello Liv this was a great blog, and a lot of detail well done for that! Maybe for next time you could maybe talk about how one device lead into another if that makes sense, similar to Ella's comment. Also maybe just break it up a little bit so it gives the reader a chance to really read it, but other than that amazing job!
