Structure and process of my group choreography

The structure me and my group used to create our choreography, was by listing certain points in the music we are using (which is called Bloodstream by Tokio Myers) and deciding what relevance the music and choreography would have to our theme. As a group we discussed and asked who would like to create choreography for sections of the music, where some were given pieces to develop in a group or individually. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WzgFohAu1W4 (Here is the link for the music we are using, Bloodstreem by Tokio Myers)

Personally I am in a group of three where we are responsible for the build in the music before a huge change occurs, we will be using contrasting movements that will have different dynamics. A movement example which we could possibly use is, standing facing the front with both feet parallel and the left arm reaching towards the ceiling whilst the right arm is slightly pulling down towards the ground by the side of your body with your head slightly looking down towards your right shoulder so that there’s a stretch on the left side of your upper body .The arms then switch places with a sudden change of resistance so the right arm changes so its pointing up towards the ceiling but with a slight curve so that the wrist is hovering over the top head with the hand relaxed and a slight lean in to the left upper body, then the left arm is in a curved shape and the finger tips almost touching the side of the left thigh with the elbow pointing towards the left side of the room, and the head is looking at the inside of your right arm. This is to show the contrast of going from a strong and structured dynamic to a more free and expressive dynamic.

To develop the choreography me and my small group of three are creating, we will be using improvisation and trial and error as well as looking into multiple practitioners for inspiration. A practitioner I have already started to research is Akram Khan who uses the style Kathak and fuses it with classical contemporary and uses a lot of conflict based themes (Chang, 2020). This is useful for us to explore because the choreography me and my group are responsible for includes the build up of the conflict between the two split personalities in the mental health issue DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). His movements usually go from a hard hitting structured action to more of a softer and eased movement which is something I think we should incorporate in our piece. A piece that I looked at was Akram Khan’s is ‘Father: Vision of the Floating World’ which is really powerful religious piece based on the Bangladesh Liberation War (Father: Vision of the Floating World - Akram Khan Company, 2020). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vtprE-yXDPg (Here is the link for Akram Khan’s Company performance of Father: Vision of the Floating World)

  1. Hi Olivia, well done this another amazing Blog! I really liked how you included an example of movement you could use for your chosen section this was really detailed and well explained so was easy to visualise. I also love how you researched in detail a choreographer you think would be good to influence the movement. I think this is a great idea and would be great to create the contrasting movements you spoke about linking back to the building tension to communicate the message for this section. For next time I would maybe talk more about what the overall plan is for each section is for example the the good memory and the bad memory and how as a class came to these decisions :)

  2. Great blog Liv! I liked how descriptive you where when explaining the movement and in future you might include how it links back to the team of DID and how the section fits into the overall piece. . I also liked how you included an example of a choreographer who inspired you and how your incorporating that going forward. Well done! :)

  3. I love to see your influence through Akram Khan's previous pieces. How did you develop what the storyboard was to the music? Is there any research that shows why music makes us feel a certain way? If you could reference the music from a place such as Spotify, apple music, Itunes etc rather than Youtube, in the style of Harvard referencing. Again don's use the Youtube link later on, think about your citations and your bibliography. Could we have some images/video to show what you are discussing in your blog in terms of choreography?

  4. Hi Liv, great blog, it was so lovely to read so well done! To improve I would suggest how it all links back to the idea of the piece which is DID so just keep that in mind and also you could go into detail about what each section is but all in all amazing blog!
