Choreography methods

In the parts of choreography I am responsible for, I am working in small groups of two and three where we have decided to split the sections equally so we have an amount of counts each. The choreography that I have created is linked to the build of the two personalities in DID beginning to start tension. The style of choreography I have used is harsh and heavy but uses a pulsing motion so that the choreography can have a good contrast when the big conflict happens between to two personalities. The ideas for this piece came from a simple standing, squatting position as I wanted the choreography to start quite low and grounded so that I could build the levels to represent the gradual tension between the personalities. A challenge I faced while creating my section was that I was only satisfied with a small part of my choreography and felt as though some of it didn’t give across the message that I wanted to portray. To overcome this I decided to video the choreography I had created and choreograph my second section I was responsible for so I had a fresh mind. After I created my second piece I already had some ideas that I wanted to use in my first section, which really helped me think about the intention of my piece. To avoid this in the future I want to write down words to do with my stimulus and think about what sort of movements might show the intention. In my next section I’m responsible for, I also use some grounded movements, however in this piece I include the contrast of highs and lows in my movements as this section is portraying the impact it has on a person with DID before they try to control it and almost pretend as though it’s not there. My movements include a lot of hesitations and sudden holds to represent the mind realising what is happening and how the person is behaving. The creative process within my choreography was made through Merce Cunningham’s chance technique merged with improvisation using words like impulse, pause and hidden. An issue I had when choreographing this section was, that I found it quite difficult at first to think of choreography that would show the realisation of having DID, so I researched some ways that choreographers creat their performances. Researching different ways to come up with movements was really useful as it really got me thinking of what movements and dynamics can portray the struggle of dealing with two personalities.

  1. Great blog Liv! I liked how you described what the music represented, and the different challenges you faced during the process. It might be nice to talk about the movement in relation to the music in future blogs. :)

  2. Interesting blog and good videos. I like to see that you have filmed and adapted and evaluated your own work as you gone along with relating it back to the stimulus. We would love to see some of the research and references you have for DID. You mention researching into choreographers and how they create their own work, can we see the references? Spell check this blog.

  3. Again, this is another great blog Liv! I loved the video's you included and the material you have created. I think its really great that you self evaluated what you had created and found ways to create something that had more of a link to the theme and message you were trying to communicate. Next time you could go into more detail about what works you researched by different choreographers to help you think of the movements and dynamics :)

  4. Hi Liv, great blog and I love how you included the videos, well done! Maybe you could include some research that you have done and references and you also mention the choreographers that helped you with this, maybe reference those as well.

  5. Hi Olivia, excellent blog post!
You really link your movements back to the stimulus and DID which is great to see. If there are any choreographers that inspired you at all maybe you could’ve included that. Well done!
